Chromating                                 Back to Process Capabilities

Chromate films are applied to plated parts to improve appearance and corrosion resistance, give greater resistance to fingerprint staining, to act as a pre-paint base to increase paint adhesion, or to impart color to metal for coloring effects or identification. Chromates are a soft coating when wet and easy to scratch. They will get harder once they have been allowed to dry and age. When parts get barrel plated and chromated, the chromate will get scratched from the rotation of the barrel. Chromates are damaged by heat greater than 150 degrees F. When chromates are combined with sealers you can greatly improve the corrosion resistance of your finish.

Hohman Plating provides the following chromates for cadmium and zinc plating:

  • Clear or blue-bright
  • Gold or iridescent
  • Black
  • Olive Drab

We also provide clear chromate for silver and copper plating.

Some chromates can also be dyed different colors such as:

  • Green
  • Blue
  • Red

Dyes must be applied immediately following a chromate. Once the chromate has been “cured” it cannot be dyed.

For chromate on aluminum see “Conversion Coatings”. This includes “Iridite”, “Alodine”, or “Chemical Film”.

For chromate on magnesium see “Conversion Coatings”. This includes “Dow 7”.
