SURF-KOTE®

1.0

SCOPE

1.1

This specification covers the application of SURF-KOTE® dry film resin bonded lubricants.

2.0

MATERIAL

2.1

SURF-KOTE® is a mixture of lubricative and bonding materials in a suitable solvent. The solid materials settle during storage. Therefore, thorough mixing prior to and during application is required.

2.2

The material as supplied has a consistency suitable for spray application.  Materials suitable for brush or dip application can be furnished to specification.

2.3

The shelf life of SURF-KOTE® dry film lubricants is one year when properly stored.  The expiration date is stamped on the container. Material should be discarded after this date.

2.4

SURF-KOTE® materials should be stored in a cool dry place and should not be exposed to extreme temperatures.

2.5

Air curing SURF-KOTE® will gel in the container if allowed to skin, so secure the lid immediately after use.

2.6

The solvent used in some SURF-KOTE® materials is flammable.  Therefore, these materials should not be used or stored near open flames.

3.0

SURFACE PREPARATION

3.1

Surfaces to which SURF-KOTE® is to be applied must be free from scale, dirt, or other contamination. Surfaces should be cleaned by a method suitable for the particular basis metal.

3.2

After cleaning, the article to be coated may be pretreated as indicated in Table I or in any other way that yields satisfactory adhesion and lubrication.

4.0

APPLICATION

4.1

Application of SURF-KOTE® Dry Film Lubricants requires care and adherence to the procedures outlined in this specification.  Articles should be coated as soon after pretreatment as is possible.  Surfaces to be coated should not be touched with bare hand as oils form the skin may affect the coating.

4.2

Application of the coating may be by spraying, brushing, or dipping.  Material having the proper consistency for the method of application should be used.

4.3

Spraying is the preferred method of application as better thickness control, uniformity, and appearance is possible.

4.4

For brushing or dipping procedures please contact Hohman Plating & Mg., Inc.

4.5

Spraying is best accomplished using a touch up type spray gun with minimum atomizing pressure.  All spray air should be free of oil, water, and foreign matter.  The spray gun should be held 6-12 inches from the article to be coated and kept moving to provide uniform coverage.  The material should strike the surface slightly wet.  The air pressure and fluid valves should be adjusted to prevent runs and to have the solvent flash off in one to ten seconds.

4.6

SURF-KOTE® Lubricants should be applied in uniform coatings from 0.0002 to 0.0005 inch.  No gain in performance is to be expected form coatings having a thickness in excess of 0.0007 inch.

5.0

CURING

5.1

The coated article should be cured in accordance with Table II.

6.0

INSPECTION

6.1

SURF-KOTE® Lubricant coatings should be of a uniform dark gray to dark blue color with a slightly dusty surface.

6.2

Adherence of the coating can be checked by pressing tape (3M 250 or equivalent) on the articles and then removing it in an abrupt stripping motion perpendicular to the surface. Traces of fine powdery material on the tape are acceptable.  The presence of large flakes or exposed basis material should be a cause for rejection.

6.3

Thickness measurements may be made by suitable instrumental methods such as micrometer, magnetic, or eddy-current methods.

7.0

HANDLING FINISHED ARTICLES

7.1

After processing, coated articles should be handled in such a manner that they are protected from damage to the coating by scuffing or scratching.  In addition, they should be protected from contamination with oil or grease.
